Dedicated pickleball facilities, indoor and outdoor, rent courts by the hour and run open play sessions where players rotate in. Padel, played on an enclosed court with glass walls, is arriving in the Sun Belt and big cities; platform tennis (paddle) is a winter game on heated, elevated courts in the Northeast and Midwest; racquetball and squash live inside athletic clubs and YMCAs; badminton and table tennis have their own clubs in most metro areas. Equipment is cheap to rent or borrow for a first session at nearly all of them.

Chicago is in Illinois, in the Midwest, where summers are warm, winters are cold and snowy, and most errands are done by car; businesses keep steady year-round hours with the usual holiday changes. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and Chicago follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. While visiting from out of town for a conference, I checked out the courts since I was staying across the street at the Hilton Chicago. 16 courts which are packed every night! Some friendly players told me that people claim a spot by placing their paddles near the court on the ground. They play tournament style so that the winner stays on court and faces new opponents. There are water fountains nearby. And amazing views of the city - plus the skyscrapers provide some shade. I played starting at 4:30pm and it got very busy by 6ish and people play well into the dark under the lights. I only deduct points because the courts are a bit short and the balls fly between courts since they lack separators.

People don’t follow the rules that are posted, 4 on 4 off. They try to hog the courts playing 2 on and winner stays on no matter how many times they win. It was our groups first time and we are never coming back. Grown men who like to argue and pout when they don’t get their way. No thanks πŸ™‚

Grant Park Pickleball Courts offer an excellent setup for both beginners and experienced players. The courts are clean, well organized, and clearly laid out. I appreciate the location because it allows you to enjoy views of the park and nearby skyline while playing. The vibe is welcoming, and people are usually happy to rotate games and include new players. It is a fun way to exercise while being outdoors in one of Chicago’s most iconic parks. I always leave feeling energized and relaxed.

One of the best spots Chicago has to offer. The views, the sense of community, and the free pickleball courts make it a great place to spend time. This place has brought so many positive changes to the community, improving physical, social, and mental well-being. It’s great to see everyone staying active, and I’ve been lucky to meet some wonderful people here. You can find players of all skill levels, and it’s easy to find a partner. When I first came out, I didn’t know anyone, but it wasn’t long before I made friends and felt like part of the community. I’m really glad to be part of such a welcoming space!

Pickleball - The game for the those with mobility restrictions, the elderly, or just out of shape 30 somethings - has a new court in the SLoop. Of course I love when new things come to the SLoop. Unfortunately, like the tennis courts next door, there will be times when groups of people come claiming they have it reserved even though no one knows how to reserve the space. Or some β€œregular” will make their own β€œrules” to the place. And of course with all the areas in Grant park that are supposed to be for the public, these courts will be closed 75% of the summer for private paid events like Lollapalooza etc. Anyways, it’s a nice place to run around with my dog in the morning. He enjoys finding all the pickleballs that people are too lazy or careless to pick up.
